Publishers, The American Historical Society,Chicago and New York , 1924. During the Revolutionary War, Jacob Garst made arms for the American troops. He was also a miller and operated the historic mill known as Garst Mill adjoining the city of Roanoke. Both Joseph and Henry Clay served in the Confederate Army and both were wounded during the Civil WAr. Records indicate that Henry Clay held the rank of private and was a Prisoner of War during the conflict. Henry Clay's date of birth is listed as April 23, 1831 in the original Garst book.
